Defined Contribution Plans

401(k)

A 401(k) is a retirement savings plan sponsored by an employer. It lets workers save and invest a piece of their paycheck before taxes are taken out. Taxes aren't paid until the money is withdrawn from the account. A Roth 401k acts in the same way, except taxes are paid at the time of the contribution but grow tax free.

403(b)

Also known as a tax-sheltered annuity (TSA) plan, 403(b) is a retirement plan for certain employees of public schools, employees of certain tax-exempt organizations, and certain ministers. Individual accounts in a 403(b) plan can be either of the following types:

Employee Stock ownership Plans — An employee-owner program that provides a company's workforce with an ownership interest in the company. In an ESOP, companies provide their employees with stock ownership, often at no upfront cost to the employee.

Profit Sharing Plans — Employer has discretion to determine when and how much the company pays into the plan. The amount allocated to each individual account is usually based on the salary level of the participant (employee).
